Project ARISE
(Abstinence, Remembering, Instilling pride, Self-worth and Education)
The name ARISE was inspired by scripture found in Luke 7:14 Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, "Young man, I say to you, get up".
Project ARISE is a community-based program operated by Sacred Zion Church, Inc. This program has been in operation since October 1999 and provides community outreach, education and prevention services.

To reach out to individuals and families to provide information, education, resources and services. Meeting the needs of the whole person: mind, body and soul.
Services
§ Community Outreach & Prevention Education: Perform outreach and recruitment in communities of color. Offer one-on-one education and information to bring awareness to high risk behaviors, promote good health, advocate for lifestyle/behavior change and provide resources available. Target Population Persons living under low socioeconomic conditions Substance abusers High risk for HIV/STIs and teen pregnancy
§ Confidential HIV Counseling, Testing and Referral Services: Traditional and rapid HIV testing. Clients are provided the result in 20 minutes. Persons who test positive receive a referral for HIV medical care and other HIV related support services. Transportation assistance is provided for HIV medical care appointments.
§ Safety Counts Program: a group intervention for persons actively using heroin and cocaine. Counselors teach the stages of change, apply techniques to build self-esteem and assists participants to set goals and identify reasonable steps toward behavior change. HIV/STD education is provided. Individual counseling is provided for all participants. Referrals to drug treatment and other support services are provided when requested. Monthly social events are held to create a community of support.
§ Comprehensive Risk Counseling Services: one-on-one, client centered, intensive counseling services for persons at high risk for HIV infection with other service needs such as homelessness and mental health care. Persons who solicit sex for drugs or money and/or share needles and works while using intravenous drugs. The Counselor teaches the stages of change, applies techniques to build self-esteem and assists participants to set goals and identify reasonable steps toward behavior change. HIV/STI education is provided. Needs assessments are performed and clients are referred to other support services and programs.
§ Spiritual Counseling: ministers available for family, marriage, individual and grief counseling. Counseling focused to assist HIV+ clients with negotiation skills, family communication, coping with voids from non-supporting/absent family members, anger and unforgiveness surrounding their status. (Ministerial staff of Sacred Zion Church volunteers their services).
